If the Ukrainians have retreated from Pisky-or do so soon-they might fall in on defensive positions along the M04/E50 highway connecting Pisky to Dnipro, the nearest major free city, 100 miles west. “Russian forces are still targeting Ukrainian troops within the settlement rather than fully controlling it.” cautiously seconded that assessment after geolocating a Russian artillery strike on apparent Ukrainian positions in Pisky on Sunday. The Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C. Defense Ministry reported as recently as Sunday. “The settlement probably remains contested,” the U.K. Russian sources more than once have claimed victory in the village, only for the fighting to resume the next day. “Without a counterbattery fight, it turns into a senseless meatgrinder, where an insane amount of our infantry is ground up in a day,” the 56th Motorized Brigade soldier wrote.īut it’s not at all clear the Russians are winning in Pisky. If the Russians and separatists indeed have captured some or all of Pisky, their artillery advantage is why. With too few guns and rockets of their own, the Ukrainians around Pisky can’t always counter Russian barrages with “counterbattery” barrages of their own. Hence the dozen battalions the Kremlin has pulled from the east to reinforce the 49th CAA in and around Kherson.īut the Russians kept enough artillery in the east to maintain a huge advantage in guns and rockets. Liberating Kherson city, on the Black Sea coast, is Kyiv’s top priority at this point in the war. Ukrainian commanders by the same token can’t send too many reinforcements to Pisky if they also expect to sustain their shaping operations around Kherson. The Kremlin has been shifting forces to the south.
Ukrainian battalions months ago crossed the Inhulets River north of Kherson, but apparently have yet to advance more than a few miles from their bridgeheads. Starving the 49th CAA is a prerequisite for any forceful Ukrainian assault into Kherson Oblast.
